![]() As with any other dog, training and socialization will be important for him so that he is obedient. Intelligent and alert, the Feist is a dog that will respond well to training. Some Feist owners prefer the look of a docked tail and then docking is between the second and third joint of the tail. He is a sturdy dog with a medium length tail which he holds up. Perhaps because of so many genes being involved with this dog, it is more easily identified because of its hunting abilities. ![]() The coat of the dog is available in a variety of colors but they are essentially a bi-colored dog such as red and white, tan and white, black and white, while solid colors are fawn, white, light brown, black and brindle too. Standing at about 46cm to 56cm in height and weighing in the region of 10 to 15kg, the Feist is a short haired dog that doesn’t shed much and he is not hypoallergenic. Today the Mountain Cur has been split into four distinct breeds: the Mountain Cur, The Mountain View Cur, the Stephens Stock, and the Treeing Tennessee Brindle. Mixing hounds and terriers created this tough, courageous dog whose tenacity and grit are second to none. Other early lines come from the Appalachian Mountains and near them in southern states. The Cur was the first American purebred dog. Like all Mountain Curs “Old Yeller” hunted and treed prey, fought a bear and held onto the nose of a charging bull. The novel “Old Yeller” was written about a Mountain Cur – a yellow shorthaired dog with a bobbed tail and terrier blood. If angry the Cur will growl and bite, so being the pack leader is vital for humans. Given the independence and intelligence of the Mountain Cur it is important that the human be the pack leader, or the Cur will assume the role. They have been known to corner bears and even bulls. The Mountain Cur wants nothing more than making you happy. They are fearless watch dogs, using their trait of being quiet on the hunt to their advantage. They are willing to face large and ferocious prey. The Mountain Cur is a tough, courageous dog as are all the Curs. By 1957 the Mountain Cur Breeder’s Association formed but it took until 1998 for the Mountain Cur to be registered with the United Kennel Club. But they argued over the standard and 2 of the 4 left to form their own association: The Stephen Stock Mountain Cur Association. ![]() They form the Original Mountain Cur Breeder’s Association of OMCBA in 1956. The breed was brought back by four ambitious men who saved the Mountain Cur. ![]() The breed became rare when the descendants of the settlers moved to the factories after the second world war. They worked with the settlers to hunt for animals that would provide them with pelts and meat in order to survive on the frontier. The ancestors of the American Mountain Cur came with European settlers almost 200 years ago. The Mountain Cur comes out of Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and Virginia. However, they are not great family dogs because they were born to hunt. Curs can be water dogs, farm dogs, hunting dogs and guard dogs. There are many types of curs and this breed is just one. They treed and bayed larger prey like the wild boar and bears in the mountains and they trailed the smaller ones like the raccoon and squirrel. ![]() This breed was developed especially to “tree” their prey and to trail other smaller game. Look for us on our Facebook site Steve Buckley's Appalachian Prick Eared Mountain Feist or Buckley Farm Kennels. From The United States in the hound group comes the Mountain Cur. All our dogs and pups are NKC registered. We do not run a puppy factory and if you are interested in a well bred, top pedigree puppy that will make a tree dog (MEAT DOG), then give us a call or text at 60. We raise and sale a few litters of pups each year and take reservations for those litters. We also are proud of the fact that we produce puppies/dogs that are treeing squirrels all over the United States. We consistently year after year fill tail gates and freezers, yes we "hunt" our dogs and "hunt" them hard. We are lucky to hunt and own some of the best Mountain Feist dogs I’ve ever followed and we are known to put a hurt on the squirrel population. All our dogs are bred to optimize both sire and dams traits to produce natural tree dogs. We study and decide carefully on how we make our crosses, whether it be linebred or outcrossed. We take pride in our dogs and we are very passionate with the crosses we make. With careful linebreeding and outcrosses we have had excellent results that speak for themselves with our dogs. Although we do outcross with a select few lines of Appalachian Prick Eared Mountain Feist to get the desired traits we search for. Here at Buckley Farm Kennels we hunt, breed, raise and train the same line of dogs. ![]()
